Persephone's story is one of the most retold of the Greek myths. Unbeknownst to her, Persephone's father, Zeus, promised her hand in marriage to Hades, the God of the Underworld, but Hades grew impatient and kidnapped poor Persephone, whisking her away to the Underworld. Her distraught mother, Demeter, searched for her everywhere and forgetting all else so that the crops in the fields began to wither and die (Demeter, of course, being the Goddess of the Harvest). The Earth grew cold and with nothing to harvest a great hunger came to the people. Meanwhile, in the Underworld, Persephone grows to love the much understood Hades and willingly eats 6 pomegranate seeds that Hades offers to her. According to the Fates, anyone who eats any food offered to them in the Underworld is compelled to stay there. Upon learning of her daughter's fate, Demeter will not let go of her fury over the loss of her daughter and creates a blight upon the land in which nothing germinates and nothing grows.  Zeus is forced to relent and strikes a compromise with Hades allowing Persephone to return above ground to be with her mother for half the year (spring and summer) and then return underground to Hades each year on the Autumn Equinox, aka Mabon, when the Earth would then descend into winter.

Persephone is a Dark Goddess who can teach us about transitions and the seasonality and cycles of all things, growth and decay, letting go, and facing our shadows. She shows us how to see both our lighter and darker aspects simultaneously. Lean into dear Persephone when conducting your own shadow work.
