Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”

William Morris, February 1880

Potager - French (pronounced poe-ta-zhay) a formal kitchen garden that's been elevated to the next level of form and function. First found in France, the potager originated as a simple kitchen garden, designed by monks to grow all the necessary ingredients to make good, nutritious soup (or potage). The highlight of these gardens is the intermingling of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs, creating a bountiful tapestry in a myriad of colors and shapes.

A common theme in potager layouts is symmetry. You'll typically see raised beds arranged in a grid-style with designated pathways in between. Brick or stone walls, boxwood hedges, vertical accents, espaliered fruit trees, an abundance of perennials, and luxuriant growth are the hallmarks of a successful potager. A striking focal point such as a sculpture, a fruit tree growing in its own raised bed or large container, an obelisk trellis covered in vines, a seating area, or a fountain reflects the personality of the gardener, draws the eye to the center, and ties the entire space together.

With its mix of graceful formality, artful romanticism and thoughtful practicality, the potager is recognised as an ornamental kitchen garden which equally honors the practical and the aesthetic.

Our Potager bar combines soothing aloe and nettle for skin-comforting practicality with a garden-fresh palette of greens and bright yellow (and a nettle pencil line to mimic the soil!) and a topping of colorful flower petals. Our refreshing clean fragrance blend starts with soothing bergamot and zesty Key lime top notes balanced by herbaceous accords of aromatic arugula, cool cucumber, fresh basil, garden mint, and peppery floral blooming cyclamen. It's a virtual walk through a kitchen garden as you harvest fresh herbs, flowers and summer vegetables in your cutting basket.
