Among superstitions, one of the oldest and most enduring is that crosssing paths with a black cat will cause you bad luck and jinx you, possibly for 7 years' time. While we now know this to be factually untrue, there are still many who cannot let go of this myth. In fact, this superstition is so ingrained in some folks that black cats at shelters have the lowest adoption rates (and highest euthanasia rates) of all breeds/colors.

Superstitions surrounding black cats reach as far back as ancient Greece. Black cats have been associated with the occult since the 13th century when it was declared by Pope Gregory IX that they were the incarnation of Satan. That decree marked the beginning of the infamous witch hunts that quickly spread across Europe. This irrational fear of black cats made its way to Puritans here in America who thought that witches could shapeshift into their familiars, and those familiars were often black cats. And that perpetuated myth is where the infamous superstition originated from - people thought that crossing paths with a black cat was the equivalent of being cursed by a witch (or dallying with the devil). Those fearful peasants would then run straight to their church and pay the priest to release them from said curse....a welcome source of income for the church that happily perpetuated these silly ideas.

Black cats shouldn’t get a bad rap just because they look sneaky and have a bit of an attitude. In fact, they’re considered good luck in many cultures. In Scotland, it’s lucky for a strange black cat to arrive at your doorstep. In Japan, black cats are thought to help single women find suitors. In other cultures they represent prosperity. Their resemblance to the cat-goddess Bastet led them to be honored in ancient Egypt.

There’s a lot of silly superstitions out there, but most of the world acknowledges black cats as cuddly—not creepy. If you happen to be searching for the purrfect addition to your witchy household, we highly encourage you to head to your nearest pet shelter and adopt a black cat. You won't be disappointed!
